"This volume accompanies the exhibition Buriki: Japanese tin toys from the golden age of the American automobile, the Yoku Tanaka collection at Japan Society Gallery, New York, July 9-August 16, 2009"--T.p. verso., Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,5, University of St. Gallen, language: English, abstract: As the economic crisis of the late 200os unfolds, the need for global political, regulatory and supervisory changes becomes apparent. This paper is intended to clarify the role that least developed countries play in this process. Different channels of vulnerability are identified and examined both in a dynamic and static framework, thereby contributing to an understanding of how and to which degree the world's poorest countries will be affected by the current global economic turmoil. It arrives at the conclusion that LDCs are likely to be negatively affected by numerous structural factors and identifies low and high vulnerability states by constructing a composite Economic Vulnerability Index., From jazz and folk to hip hop, heavy metal, and straight edge, popular music is not only a cultural artifact but an ever-expanding part of our social lives. The sixteen different genres explored in Music Sociology demonstrate that music everywhere reflects social values, organizational processes, meanings, and individual identity. Presenting original ethnographic research, the contributors use descriptions of subcultures to explain the concepts of music sociology, including the rituals that link people to music and to the past and each other. Authors consider the intersections of race, class, and gender identity as it is learned, structured, and modified through lyrics and cultural experiences. Authenticity of music in the way it is performed, understood, and experienced is central to the book, as is the way the music industry and technology further modify these experiences. Written by sociologists also involved in music, this collection takes the reader on a very personal yet public journey. It introduces sociology of music to those who may not be familiar with it and provides a basic historical perspective on popular music in America., Tin toys have been made in Japan for more than 100 years, but during World War II their production--and international sales--ended. Almost as soon as the war was over, ingenious manufacturers began to make model Jeeps out of recycled food cans. With the resumption of international trade in 1948, exports of more sophisticated metal toys soared. At the same time, the postwar boom in the United States led to an increasingly automobile-based society--the perfect inspiration for Japan's gifted toy designers. As leading marques competed to market ever more seductively styled autos to U.S. consumers, Japanese toy manufacturers followed styling trends closely, retooling often to create miniature versions of the latest models; airplanes, spaceships, and other vehicles were also popular. The Tanaka collection is a treasure-trove of more than 500 immaculate model vehicles, enthusiastically collected over the last 50 years. Buriki offers a lively tour of its highlights, evoking the heady, expansive spirit of the 1950s in both the U.S. and Japan. Its 60 cars, along with prime examples of other modes of transportation, will delight young and old with the quality of their detailing and bright color schemes.
